] Have you noticed that whenever Mr. Beebe is willing to make some small talk, or simply be friendly he is sure to say something in relation to what the person he is talking to is afraid of, or is trying to hide or forget.

At least I think the tennis 'game' was called bumble-ball. Mr. Beebe makes small talk specifically to let Lucy 'recover' from hearing what Cecil had done to supplant the Miss Alans. He talks on and on about the Emersons and about violets. She blushes and Mr. Beebe supposes Lucy hadn't yet recovered from what Cecil had done when he actually was inflicting more upon Lucy.
