] I would only add that I think Charlotte has a lot of internal anger and this is what separates her from the Miss Alans, Mrs. Honeychurch (and even Miss Bates, mentioned at the beginning of this discussion).


I always wondered if Charlotte had a love at one time like Lucy, and instead of going towards her love, she decided to cast it away and pretend it didn't exist (because it wasn't a 'good' match?) ...There's some line in the book..."The night received Lucy as it had Charlotte thirty years before."(something like that) I don't know how old Charlotte is, but the fact that Forster actually points out how many years ago and...am I completely off and reading too much into the words?
I remember someone, Jane Austen?, saying that all spinsters have some tragic love story behind them...
