It's been a while since I've read the novel, but I just watched the movie again a few weeks ago, so I'll chime in here.

First of all, I LOVE it when Mrs. Honeychurch tells Lucy she's behaving like Charlotte. First of all becuase it miffs Lucy, but also because I always suspected Charlotte had hidden depths!

I hadn't thought about it much before, but I guess the comparison refers to Lucy's difficult behavior. When she agrees to the engagement with Cecil, she is going with the flow, doing what is expected of her. But then, in her talks with George and Cecil she shows a stubborn streak and (at least in her talk with George) an almost peevish contrariness that is perhaps usually associated with Charlotte?
