In response to Butler revisited, written by Isobel on February 26, 1998 at 07:58:42

So what does it mean that Mr. Emerson refers to Butler as "a friend of mine"? (My dictionary lists Butler's dates as 1835-1902, so they would be contemporaries.) Does Forster imply that Mr. Emerson actually knew Butler? Or does Mr. Emerson just refer to his favorite authors as "friends"??
(I'm sure many of us think of authors we don't know as friends in a way!)
