Kay, I think you're right about the first reason having something to do with her displeasure. I don't accuse Mrs. H. of being a heartless social climber--I just think it matters to her that Lucy have a secure future.
But Lucy's jilting Cecil (even if he deserves it) for George is different that just calling off the engagement, which I think Mrs. H. could have supported well enough (even did). George being in the picture means that Lucy was fickle--that she has caused a pretty big social embarrassment for the whole family. And she has deceived nearly everyone, as Mr. Emerson points out. She pretended she was ending the engagement for lofty reasons when in fact she'd simply fallen in love with George. That was very bad manners.
