] One thing I never got from the movie, which seems clear from the book, is that Lucy's mother seems not to have consented to her marrying George. So she has had to be even more strong willed than I thought to carry the whole thing through.

We know that Mrs. Honeychurch really didn't want Lucy to marry Cecil and that she probably liked George Emerson better. Then why didn't she consent to the marriage? Two thoughts come to mind.
1. She wanted Lucy to marry someone with social standing - a Cecil without all his faults.
2. She was hurt by Lucy's behavior at the end of the book and took it personally that Lucy wanted to travel to Greece with the Miss Alans. She might think that Lucy's marriage to George is just a way of escaping the Honeychurch home.

I don't know if either of these thoughts is on target or if there could be another reason. What do others think?
