The big(?) change in George

When I first saw the movie, I wasn't at all aware that the murder scene had caused any change in George. The book makes it more clear that there has been a change, and points out the differences in him -- moving from the "note of interrogation" to "wanting to stand in the sun."
However, I find I still can't quite believe the change -- perhaps because the reader knows so little of George before, so there is nothing to which you can compare his changed behavior?
Any other thoughts on this?
