The Bowdlerizer was born a couple of generations before. John Bowdler if not a direct descendent of Thomas was at least his spiritual descendent, with his fear of offending susceptibilities. I think John is just the typical Victorian man responsible for a whole generation of Charlotte Bartletts who were afraid to act until it was to late and who were afraid to think without validation.
I think, however, that there were plenty of Victorian women who were able to ignore the John Bowdlers of their day.
