It makes his attitude towards Lucy and Miss Bartlett and all the woman in general more reasonable. However I don't think he is, shall I say "actively" gay; I don't believe he would be, given the times and he being a parson...
I was wondering if perhaps Forster sort of projected himself in the character of Mr. Beebes... the latter representing the former's POV of the other characters... I'll have to think about it..
