Playing by the rules

And the Emersons, who most certainly are not playing by the accepted rules of the little British society in the pension Bertolini, are carefully pushed away until no one associates with them. (I am thinking of a scene in which they were suddenly dining alone, when they had been sharing a table earlier.)
Is Lucy's confusion partly due to her fear of breaking the rules, then, even when she isn't sure what the rules are?
