I had never read this before, and I giggled my way through it. Forster keeps tongue firmly in cheek most of the time.

Here are some favourites

Chapter 1
Miss Lavish (BTW, how appropriately she is named!)
"Prato! They must go to Prato. That place is too sweetly squalid for words. I love it; I revel in shaking off the tramels of respectabililty as you know"

Lucy: "He is nice.... He seems to see good in everyone. No one would take him for a clergyman"

Chapter 2
Miss Lavish: " I will take you by a dear dirty back way, Miss Honeychurch"

and ; "One doesn't come to Italy for niceness"

Lucy's view of Santa Croce:
"Of course it must be a wonderful building. But how like a barn!...There was no one to tell her which of all the sepulchral slabs that paved the nave and transepts, was the one that was really beautiful."
