] So why are we so surprised when things end exactly the way Peter Carey tells us it will throughout the entire book? I think it a great testament to Carey's storytelling ability that we ignore the evidence and still hope things will turn out alright. I know I did...


I know I missed all the references to Lucinda not being the great-grandmother, and I found the fact that she was usurped by Miriam harder to accept than Oscar's death.
I guess we do ignore the omens because we are filled with wishful thinking because the story-telling is so good.
I also think that because the writing is so vivid and detailed, its hard to hang onto every detail, especially when we don't yet know how it fits into the whole scheme of things.
