Why Oscar and Lucinda?

Given the fact that the child was born after Oscar's death, isn't it strange that the family history revolves around him and Lucinda? It seems to me that, since Miriam was the only parent, it is her history that would end up being passed down through the generations - not that of people that nobody in the family (except Miriam, and only barely) had ever met...
