Ok, time for my rant?

Well, here we are at the end of O&L, and while there are plenty of good things I want to talk about, I must get this rant out of my system and hope that someone (Hil? ;-) can help me to accept the ending to this novel.

It is such a lovely boook, filled with wonderful prose, interesting characters and situations, and then BAM! we hit the last 50 pages! I hate this. I hate that Oscar dies, in the worst possible way for him, a tortured, beaten man. I hate that the narrator's great-grandmother is not Lucinda, but that opportunistic slut, Miriam. I hate it, I hate it.

I'm not one of those people who have to have a happy ending or they whine, but this is way beyond a not happy ending. I loved reading every page of this book until the last 50, and then it took such an abrupt turn that I was angry and felt betrayed. Someone explain to me why.

Tthhpphhtthh!! Peter Carey!
