Middlemarch as Soap

] It's a hard book to get into, but stick with it; the characters really grow on you. As a matter of fact, when Russell Baker was introducing the series on Masterpiece Theatre he said that he was dreading re-reading the book, remembering that he found it hard as a student. But he was amazed to discover that he began reading faster and faster, really getting caught up in the story and especially in Dorothea's story. I agree, and I also really got involved in the Fred Vincey/Mary Garth subplot, especially in the series!
I think I've read Middlemarch too many times to find it a difficult read but when asked last autumn about how to apporach the novel I recommended treating it like an intellectual soap opera with the town playing a central role.
I think we should read this book, then everyone could fall in love with Will Ladislaw and share him with me. ;-)
