Melody is another character whose Point Of View we get briefly (like the little Elizabeth in Parramatta, and the servants in England). This really adds to the richness of the story (though it makes it harder to follow) because you have the experience of seeing characters and events through a completely different perspective. Melody's view of Oscar is probably how he was seen by most people - it was only Wardley-Fish who knew him so well who was able to see past the "oddness".
