] I ordered O&L on ILL, looked forward to reading it, duly started it, and now I am kind of stuck. I'm having a tough time liking this so far. I'm not too far along (Oscar is at Oxford and is going to the track), but I can't seem to really get into it. I do enjoy some of the detail, but after awhile I just want the story to get moving.
I've gotten farther into the book than you have, but I have the same feeling that you do. I'm not loving this. I am curious as to what happens to the characters, but I'm not drawn to any of them. However, there are some passages that are so vivid that you must just appreciate Carey's writing.
I'm almost done with the book. I know I'll finish it, but I suspect that the book will be placed on the shelf never to be looked at again. I'm rather disappointed because I had such high expectations for the book. Does anyone else feel the same way -- high expectations that aren't met?
