A suggestion for Middlemarch

Although, and I stress this, it is in no way as good as the book, you might try watching the recent BBC Middlemarch series along with reading the book. The screenplay is by P&P2's Andrew Davies and, even though he took some heat, I think he did a better job here of adapting the author's "voice". (IMO) Or maybe it's just that I've read P&P so many more times than Middlemarch that I'm biased! ;-)
It's a hard book to get into, but stick with it; the characters really grow on you. As a matter of fact, when Russell Baker was introducing the series on Masterpiece Theatre he said that he was dreading re-reading the book, remembering that he found it hard as a student. But he was amazed to discover that he began reading faster and faster, really getting caught up in the story and especially in Dorothea's story. I agree, and I also really got involved in the Fred Vincey/Mary Garth subplot, especially in the series!
