] ] Throughout the book, Carey mentions how people are taken with Oscar, that just looking at him was like looking at an angel, talking with him put their minds on a higher plain; people saw an aura of divinity about him.

] ] I love the episode on the ship when Mr Borrodaile does a cruel immitation of Oscar's walk and mannerisms. Oscar is not offended or angry and his response uplifts and changes the entire atmosphere of his party. It even leads Mr Borradaile to be nice to his fellow passengers, if only for a half hour.

] ] Is Oscar incapable of thinking meanly of anyone? Does he have that spark of divinity or is he merely deluded?

] ] (This is, of course, all before Mr. Jeffris, but that's next week!)

]

] It's hard to know whether Oscar is simply a bit "simple" and unable to understand what's going on, or slightly divine. The thing I find is that despite his wonderful attitudes I actually find him hard to LIKE. He's just too different, he makes me feel uncomfortable (as he no doubt did to everyone else). He's not the sort of person I could imagine spending heaps of time with and enjoying it. At this point, anyway.
