Lynn, this book was a different kind of experience for me, too, though not quite what you're describing. Something that is far out of the ordinary - I didn't find myself particularly liking any of the characters, couldn't really identify with anybody. I certainly felt bad for poor Oscar's (and Lucinda's) alone-ness, and the horrible things that happened to them, but I definitely felt like an unaffected bystander. BUT, that's not to say it didn't draw me in to the story. ...? I'm sure I'm not explaining it right - almost like I really didn't like the book, but I liked reading it. ...?
