] I ordered O&L on ILL, looked forward to reading it, duly started it, and now I am kind of stuck. I'm having a tough time liking this so far. I'm not too far along (Oscar is at Oxford and is going to the track), but I can't seem to really get into it. I do enjoy some of the detail, but after awhile I just want the story to get moving.

] I know that I'm not stupid, so I know it's not that the book is beyond me. Is it just that the style doesn't appeal to me? Is anyone else having a hard time slogging through this? Will all you O&L lovers hate me for this?!

It's not the easiest book to read I've ever read either. Carey certainly has a fairly laissez faire approach to plot! But I have found it worth persisting. My approach has been to really sit down and read it for about an hour at a time, which means you cover enough so that something has actually happened!

But sometimes there are just books one doesn't like. Don't persist just because you feel you must!
