No, I don't think he believes he's being selfish, he is trying desperately to communicate with his son. He regrets his actions about the Christmas pudding and feels the new distance between them.

I agree, Theophilus is a passionate man, but he cannot express it. Look at how he has never spoken of his lost wife, how he listens to Oscar's heart every morning desperate for reassurance that he won't lose his son too. And of course, that is exactly what happened, partly through his inability to express his love. It is, as you mentioned in another thread, excrusiating.
