The chimps are General Tilney's research subjects, so he can develop evil diseases for the military-industrial complex. He's awfully proud of his lines of cages, and smirks when Catherine admits that Professor Allen only has two chimps, which he keeps in the garage.

Catherine's glimpses into disease research, coupled with her extensive reading in medical thrillers, give her the chilling notion that the General might have been capable of inflicting one of his pet bacteria on his late wife. Henry of course disabuses her of this fantastical notion, as related above.

In a throwaway scene, gkb sneaks into the complex and distributes pistols to the chimps, thus setting the stage for a sequel...
