I don't think that she is a "sad shatter-brained creature". OK, you cannot call her brilliant, but she can sometimes be witty, defend her own opinions and even be a match to Henry in a discussion. -
And she may have no taste for serious reading, but she is only 17, and has time to "learn" to like better books yet.
