] I wish they could have found time to put it in the movie. For one, it shows how much Will realizes he's missed out on. And perhaps shows that he feels guilty for causing her near-death. It was entirely his doing that she ever attached herself to him (if he had not been so agreeable in everything she would not have liked him much more than Brandon), and then they sustained it together until he was forced to go away--and he would not tell her the real reason for his going, and did not put an end to her hope! He probably didn't feel as guilty as he ought....

According to Emma Thompson's S&S Diaries (included with the screenplay), she wrote many different versions of this scene. In the end, they felt it interfered too much with the Brandon love story and decided to leave it out.
