The trip back to Fullerton is really the only time where Catherine is really in danger, and very much so, travelling alone. Imagine if Eleanor had not thought to ask her about money!

And she is truly distraught just like a heroine in a novel, but here the situation is so real! And she's probably far too miserable to appreciate the similarities.

I love her mother's comment that
"it is a great comfort to find that she is not a poor helpless creature but can shift very well for herself."

A true heroine!
