In the end, Mrs. Smith tells Anne that Mr. Elliot is practically bankrupt (right?--I've only seen it once, and know it is different from the book), and that was the reason he wanted to marry her. In the book, he had a different, though still wrong, reason for marrying her. I think that they changed it in the movie because it was too long, difficult and involved to explain it (and resolve it) the way JA did, and chose the quick way out. Perhaps they did film it this way and also the other way (which would explain the goof).
