] I think that Catherine has more intelligence. Granted, she is influenced by Isabella, James, Henry, et al, but she does stick up for herself and her opinions more than does Harriet.


Other speculations:
Catherine in Harriet's situation might not have been so easily persuaded that Mr. Elton loved her. Isabella couldn't even persuade her that John Thorpe was after her in his own unique way ; ) But she also probably wouldn't have noticed that Mr. Elton's attentions were to Emma and not to her. (Since she didn't notice Isabella and James spooning.) Of course Emma didn't notice either!

And if Mr. Knightley were to ask her to dance, Catherine would probably assume (as she did when Capt. Tilney asked Isabella) that he was doing it to be polite and that was all!
