This is the last quote I will post from Prof. Marilyn Butler, but this was the silliest one by far, and I have been waiting until this week since it refers to the visit to Woodston in Chapter 26:

"The General here outdoes himself in villainy, by echoing Satan's temptation of Christ in the wilderness in the language he knows best, that of a salesman of real estate."

Like John Thorpe as the used carriage salesman??

I hope Prof. Butler was laughing as she wrote this.

Anyway, I've been visiting my parents for a few days and learned that my father had accidently taped over my good copy of Northanger Abbey (the commercial-free one that I had taped off PBS a few years back) : (
