I, unfortunately, have never been able to get through Udolpho, but similar plotting (if memory serves!) seems to have occured even in "quality" Georgian literature, like Clarissa, for example. And sometimes the plotters are even members of the heroines own family!!!
Hmmm....maybe I'll go back and read some of these novels again....in all of my vast amounts of spare time, that is!
