] What horrors lay beyond????? = : O

Turns out it was a waxen figure of a corpse wrapped in grave clothes and disfigured by worms. You know, the sort of Image of Death that people used to keep around to remind them of the evanescence of the flesh. Their equivalent of a "Don't be caught dead without Jesus" bumper sticker.

] I was at Border's Books today and almost bought a copy of Udolpho to have another whack at it, and started skimming through to see if the pace picked up any but decided that I would save my money and buy a new Penguin classics edition of Northanger Abbey instead since I was getting annoyed with all the typos in my cheap 1970s paperback version!!

That's a good move - when I replaced MY cheap paperback, I discovered it had been abridged! So I got to read the story again new, and it made a lot more sense!
