I am so glad you said that about Udolpho. [snip] I felt like, if I wanted to learn about botany, I would have taken out a book on plants!
LOL!! : D
] However, I can see how the general populace liked those books. They had nothing better to do!!
Trying to read Udolpho really gave me an appreciation of the difference of the pace of life. I definitely do not have Catherine's attention span.
But consider that books are her window on the world. Since I can't discuss the future plot twists I will at least say that so far she has not traveled extensively (beyond Bath anyway), and she could not see photographs or movies of foreign countries so she only knows about these places through reading. She mentions in chapter 14 that the scenery around Bath reminds her of the south of France which she only knows about from reading all those excessive botanical descriptions in Udolpho! (Yes, I know we're only discussing up to Ch. 10 right now : P)
I think I will go back to get the "abridged" version. Shame on me!!
I'm waiting for the TV mini-series Udolpho, starring Tori Spellman as Emily.....
