Full dress = court dress, feathers the full nine yards (very very formal)
Dress = evening dress (women short trains, bare arms, low neckline), men with breeches, silk stockings - formal wear, the sort that we today would wear to a formal ball).
Gentry and nobility had endless forms of dress - train, demi train, walking dress, morning dress, carriage dress and so on.
