] Part of it might be that both Jane and Frank were happy (mostly) with their engagement, but Edward wanted out and was stuck in his.
Frank Churchill and Lucy Steele seem to be the conniving parties in both engagements---each waiting because someone else had the power and money---and hoping for the death of that person so that they could postion themselves better financially. It was hard to get a sense out of what Jane and Edward wanted, but I think they each wanted different things: Jane wanted the engagement to be made public in order to secure her place in life-----and Edward probably desired its continued subterfuge because his place in life was more secure. With Jane, the longer the secret held, the more likely she was of losing Frank, especially when she saw his flirtation with Emma--something she did not desire.. With Edward, the longer the secret held, the more likely he was to lose Lucy and thus gain Elinor---something he seemed to desire very much
Nice discussion!---hope someone has more to say________
