] You forgot about Sense and Sensibility...I've only seen the movie so far, so I do not know what she's like in the book, but as far as I've seen, S&S has a mother that is present, except when Marianne and Elinor are allowed to go to London and Mrs. Dashwood isn't there to help Marianne when she gets her heart broken by Willoughby.-KAREN L
I read the book a long time ago, so I can't remember it very well. However I have this impression that Mrs. Dashwood was more like an elder sister than a mother. But I may be wrong.
