] Yes, but JA obviously faults Mr Bennet for not having worked and saved to assure more financial security for his family when the estate passed, as it must, to the nearest male heir. Could not Mr Dashwood, too, have put some of his income "into the funds" to buy that annuity himself?
In the book, Mr. Dashwood only inherits the estate himself about a year before he dies. He doesn't have time to put money aside.
Mr. Bennett of course could have done something, but on the other had he was assuming they would have a son.
