] some pictures by Thomas Nast, who made the popular image of "Santa Claus" for most Americans in the last century, and his Santa was dressed all in fur and was small, elf-sized, rather than the life-size or larger man, wearing. a smooth velvety fabric, whom we now visualize -- and who perhaps comes from the Coca-Cola painting series.
If you recall Clement Moore's "A Night Before Christmas" poem. He really gives the first description of the "jolly old elf" as "dressed all in fur from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot."
Makes sense if you've been zipping up and down chimneys all night.
He also describes "A miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer,With a little old driver." Really an elf.
