] Having read most of her work, none are equal to Possession. Before making the commitment to her Frederica Potter trilogy, I would advise you to read "The Game." Its a couple of hundred pages, but it may give you a hint as to the darker side of Byatt. If you read the teaser on the jacket, they aren't kidding when they talk about sibling rivalry taken to the extremes. It's heavy.
] The Virgin in the Garden, Still Life, and Babel Tower (the three of the four in the series) are quite good. Babel Tower is a killer and way tooooo long. I think I'm going to reread this series in a little while.
] I have not read The Matisse Stories, but they may be lighter, but I'm not sure.
I was at the Book Warehouse on Saturday and found The Tower of Babel for $6.00. I bought it before I read your message. Oh well, $6.00 isn't too much for a hard bound book (and that is the reason why I will never be rich.) I will try reading "The Game" first, then the trilogy (of which The Tower Babel is third.) Thanks so much for your suggestions about Margaret Drabble, and Charles Palliser. I am off to the bookstore to see if these are in stock. Wish me luck!
