I've never seen the movie, however, I remember reading at the time that the director of the movie decided that what he was making was the "prequel" to Jane Eyre, with basically the same POV (ie poor benighted vulnerable young englishman put upon by mad woman and her family) while the writer was interested in Bertha's POV ie, what is it about being married off to someone you don't know that might make you go mad?... according to this article, they never resolved this basic problem, and the movie, as a result, is a mess.
