I couldn't repress a smile at your - ahem - succinct opinion of the book. I agree that the beginning is a little tough to get into, but it's worth it, once the story starts to develop. (It wasn't just the first 5 or 6 pages - try the first 20 or 30! I just plowed on because I hate leaving a book unfinished.)

The other problem may have been the genre - if your fantasy book club started reading the book because Brust & Bull are excellent fantasists, and they expected more magic and faery (instead of opium dreams and secret societies), I'm sure they were disappointed.
