In response to Scrooge and Mr Bennet, written by Amy on December 15, 1997 at 14:42:16

] Mr Bennet is introspective enough not to need a guide -- only events -- to bring his life's errors into focus, but is more pitiable, I think, since there's little he can do now about the mess.

I'm not sure about that one. Mr Bennet cannot see the temptations right in front of his eyes, remember his reply to Elizabeth's request tht Lydia not go to Brighton. His judgment isn't nearly as good as he thinks it is. Also, Mr Bennet admits his tendancy to shirk his responsiblites. A little haunting mihgt do him good. Although its effects aren't likely to prove long lasting, Mr Bennet doesn't like change.

Scrooge, on the other hand, embraces the oppurtunity and does change.
