Wickham has proved himself to be clever in some ways and stupid in others.
I think that he liked young girls. He knew that Lydia, while not without family, did not have the "connections" that could force him to make an "honest woman" of her.
He could have figured that he could have a little fun with her. Dump her. "go to Europe" and find himself a wife with money"
