It's possible that Mrs Bennet saw more into the relationship than really was. I think Elizabeth is just being truthful by saying that maybe his affections weren't quite as severe as Mrs Bennet's, Mrs Gardiner's or Jane' for that matter.

But I do love Darcy's reply to Elizabeth. Very Twelfth Nightish:)
