Well, actually, I think Charlotte Brontė might have thought that a novel titled just "Caroline" would have sounded a little like a conventional silly novel; in her day, "Shirley" was a surname, which might have sometimes been used as a first name for boys (just as Fitzwilliam Darcy has a surname for first name), but it was not at all usual as a girls' name (in fact, it was this very book which made "Shirley" into a girls' name).
So, don't you think there are resemblances between Caroline Helstone and Fanny Price? ;-)
