One phrase in the letter that always sticks out for me is:

If your abhorrence of me should make my assertions valueless, you cannot be prevented by the same cause from confiding in my cousin.

In order to write that line, he had to accept that the woman he loves, abhors him and thinks he is dishonorable. It must have torn his soul to write that line. (Don't you love how we discuss this as if he were a real person who really did write the letter!)
