] Apropos of Jane Eyre... "Wide Sargasso Sea" is a haunting prequel to JE written by Jean Rhys. It's not new, so look for it at the library.
________

We read Wide Sargasso Sea immediately after Jane Eyre, in a Women's literature course --mind you, my professor had a rather proto-feminist agenda., which colored all of her interpretations. Nevertheless, --too put it briefly-- I found that WSS added subtle (in the sense that it was not so heavy-handed, as to not be clever), but profound dimensions to the characters of Bronte's novel, especially, Jane; which is interesting considering she 'did not exist' chronologically relative to the events in WSS. Well, I'll save it for July.

But for this reason, I think we might fruitful for us to read WSS, as well. It is fairly short (approximately 150 to 200 pages).
