He can also be very, very funny. The scene with the chaise-longue being brought into Mrs. Proudie's reception is superb. However, all of the examples I can think of off the top of my head raise their laughs from the female characters. Can anyone remember him ridiculing men.

Well, it's een awhile since I re-read. But Bertie Stanhope, if I recall, is just as silly as his sister Madeline, "la Signora." There are many laughs at the expense of various Barchester Clergy. Good heavens, think of the Reverend Obadiah Slope! (Actually I try not to!)

And there was Mr Thorne with his somewhat laughable preoccupation with the Good Old Days.
