] Karen, these aren't classics.....yet! But I would suggest for the 13 yr old a series of books, starting with 'Tomorrow when the war began' by Australian author John Marsden. They are contemporary, exciting, and in touch with race/gender/youth issues. Kids from about 11 up love them...cannot put them down...but unlike Goosebumps they are good literature. Not classical romance or adventure, but gutsy and wortyhwhile.
] His other books could be okay for your 11 year old, too.
I haven't read the "Tomorrow" series, but on Marsden's other books, I find them too dark at 19,(though gripping and excellent narratives) with the possible exception of the sequel to"So Much to Tell you", which is better for a girl.
