Wow, Ann. Superb Post! That is why I keep coming to Pemberley. I thoroughly enjoy well thought out, intelligent essays that aren't dripping with pretense. Thank-you.

I do have one relatively minor quibble, though. It is with your, "If Darcy, in the heat of passion, had been accepted at his first proposal, the marriage would have been a disaster..."

No, he did not yet respect Elizabeth. But does it automatically follow that he never would? I agree that the road to ultimate happiness would have been rocky indeed, but I don't think you can safely say they would never arrive there. Perhaps a "most likely", or a "probably", or an "almost certain" would be appropiate here.
What do you think?
