] Keep in mind that it was common practice to propose in a letter. It was, in fact, the accepted way of doing it. I suppose it gave the lady a better opportunity to refuse, without having to do it to the man's face.
Really? I hadn't heard that before. Are you sure? That definitely puts a different light upon it, if that is the case.
